Albanians are celebrating their 100th anniversary of independence from the Ottoman Empire, declared on 28 November 1912. Tirana's main square, named after 15th Century Albanian national hero George Kastrioti Skanderbeg, was flooded with flags.

Albania, officially known as the Republic of Albania, is a country in Southeastern Europe. It is bordered by Montenegro to the northwest, Kosovo to the northeast, Macedonia to the east, and Greece to the south and southeast. It has a coast on the Adriatic Sea to the west and on the Ionian Sea to the southwest. It is less than 72 km (45 mi) from Italy, across the Strait of Otranto which links the Adriatic Sea to the Ionian Sea. Albanian is the official language of Albania. According to the 2011 Census results, the total population of Albania is 2,821,977 with a low Fertility rate of 1.49 children born per woman.
